Low Blood Sugar

Hyperglycemia

WATCH FOR:


1. Cold sweat, faintness, dizziness


2. Headache


3. Pounding of heart, trembling, nervouseness


4. Blurred vision


5. Hunger


6. Irritability


7. Personality change


8. Not able to wake up




WHAT TO DO:


1. Check blood sugar level, if possible, with Blood Glucose Monitoring System.


2. Immediately take 2-3 Glucose Tablets, liguids or food containing sugar


3. Wait 15 minutes and retest blood sugar


4. If blood sugar is still less than 60mg/dL, treat with Glucose Tablets, liquids or foods containing sugar, Follow with next meal or snack


5. DO NOT give anything by mouth if unconscious


6. If unconscious, inject glucagon according to package directions and call local Emergency Medical Services


7. Report ALL moderate and severe reactions to doctor


CAUSES:


TOO much insulin


NOT eating enough food


Unusual amount of exercise


Delayed meal Drinking alcohol without eating food


If your symptoms make you uncomfortable and you feel that you do not have the time to check your blood sugar, eat first and then check your blood sugar.

High Blood Sugar

Hyperglydcemia

WATCH FOR:


1. Increased thirst and urination


2. Large amounts of sugar in the blood


3. Ketones in the urine


4. Weakness, stomach pains, general aches


5. Heavy labored breathing


6. Loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting


7. Fatigue




WHAT TO DO:


1. Call health care professional immediately


2. Drink fluids without sugar if able to swallow


3. Test blood sugar frequently with a Blood Glucose Monitoring System


4. Test urine for ketones if blood sugar is greater than 240mg/dL


CAUSES:


1. Not enough insulin


2. Too much food


3. Infection, fever, illness


4. Emotional stress
